Case Study: E-7A Wedgetail Aircraft - Royal Australian Air Force

Australia’s fleet of six E-7A Wedgetail aircraft provides the Royal Australian Air Force with one of the most advanced airspace battle management capabilities in the world.

Challenge

Nova Systems first started working with the Australian Defence Force in 2005 to write the Test and Evaluation master plan to introduce E-7A Wedgetail Boeing 737-700 IGW aircraft now operated by No. 2 Squadron based at RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle.

Solution

Nova Systems’ unique skills, including expertise in operational evaluation, understanding of capability life cycles and having team members with first-hand experience operating the aircraft, has provided invaluable support for the program.

Outcome

Our team continues to build a wealth of knowledge and experience, supporting Test and Evaluation of the highly complex aircraft, achieving Initial Operational Capability in November 2012 and Full Operational Capability in May 2015.

The E-7A has been deployed in operations, responsible for the command and control of all coalition aircraft in a ‘battle management area’. Crews have regularly managed more than 80 combat aircraft during a single mission and using its air-to-air refuelling capability, conducted record-breaking endurance sorties for the aircraft type at the time.
