Case Study: Passive Array Sensor for Space Domain Awareness, Partnership with Curtin University

The free use of the space domain is constrained due to congestion, especially in low earth orbit, where space debris and satellites threaten irreversible impacts to satellites and the orbit. Ensuring we can maintain awareness of potential conjunction risks is crucial for responsible and successful space operations now and into the future.

Solution

Nova Systems has partnered with Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research to develop an Australian designed, manufactured and operated passive radar sensor prototype, hosted at the Nova Systems Space Precinct in Peterborough, South Australia. Once operational, it will demonstrate 24/7 persistent, wide-field passive surveillance in all-weather conditions.

The multi-mode passive radar sensor is expandable, electronically reconfigurable and covertly secure for simultaneous, continuous multi-application operation. Once fielded, it will allow for ongoing research into data processing and the detection optimisation and characterisation of resident space objects and space weather.

Challenge

The data from the passive array sensor will be processed to demonstrate the detection, characterisation and tracking of resident space objects (RSOs) using passive radar techniques.

This will support the development of a catalogue that will ensure safer operating environments for future space missions through increased orbital awareness.
