Challenge
Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) is responsible for the maintenance and renewal of Melbourne’s extensive rail network that includes nearly 1000 kilometres of track, and around 500 structures, overhead assets and signals. The challenge was bringing their manual paper-based track access requests (over 30,000 requests each year) into a bespoke cloud-based application, to streamline requests and approvals, ensuring the safety of 400 maintenance staff and 600 contractors as they work in and around the tracks.
Solution
Nova Systems was engaged to build MTM a cloud-based application that simplified the way Work on Track requests were created and managed. The Work on Track Application (WOTA) was built on Esri ArcGIS and Geocortex platforms, demonstrating our in-house combined cloud and GIS expertise. Running in the Amazon Web Service’s environment, the application has been designed so that the Esri and Geocortex deployments can be scaled up over time as the platform is used more widely across MTM. This build configuration ensures an enterprise GIS platform that meets the high availability, performance and cost efficiency requirements of MTM.
Outcome
The application migrated the team of 400 supervisors and 600 contractors from manual paper-based hazard assessment process to the digital solution. As a result, safety has improved with the applications integrated business logic and spatial analysis providing more rigorous built-in guidance about safety issues. Through adoption of the application, MTM has seen a 10% reduction in use of Lookout Only protections in favour of more rigorous work safety protection methods.
