Support is our distinction: Why Nova fleet and safety systems are in demand

02/07/26

Most organisations do not struggle because they lack technology. They struggle because their technology does not work together.

Written by Paul Weiss, Client and Partnership Lead – Fleet & Safety Systems

Fleet systems sit in one place. Safety tools in another. Asset management somewhere else. Each system can perform well on its own, but together they are often fragmented. In complex and high-risk environments, that fragmentation creates real challenges.

Having spent close to two decades working across fleet operations, technology and human safety, this is a pattern I have seen repeatedly. It was a key driver behind what is now the Nova In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) ecosystem.

Essential Energy’s Fleet Safety Transformation

A practical starting point

Before joining Nova Systems, I founded a startup called Auspace. The goal was simple. Build a system that could help protect people working alone or operating vehicles in environments where help is not always nearby.

At the time, connected safety platforms were still emerging. What mattered then, and still matters today, is building systems that can detect incidents, escalate alerts and support fast response.

As the technology matured and client needs became more sophisticated, it became clear that safety could not be viewed in isolation. Organisations wanted greater visibility across their vehicles, people and operations, all within a single environment. That evolution led to the development of more integrated solutions and ultimately informed the fleet and safety ecosystem we continue to build and enhance at Nova Systems today.

Because in safety, time matters.

From systems to an ecosystem

Today, as Client and Partnerships Lead for Fleet and Safety Systems at Nova Systems, I work with partners and organisations to turn fragmented fleet and safety data into practical operational insight. That philosophy sits at the heart of the Nova IVMS ecosystem, which brings together our Geotab telematics with safety incident management and operational intelligence into a cohesive ecosystem.

At its core is the Global Alerting Platform, or GAP, developed by Nova Systems. It supports structured incident workflows, real time situational awareness and strong reporting and compliance capability. The result is a system that supports decision making from frontline teams through to senior leaders.

Turning data into decisions

A key strength of the Nova ecosystem is how it translates data into practical outcomes.

Senior executives and Boards can analyse fleet performance, utilisation and risk using advanced analytics. Fleet managers gain visibility of asset condition, availability and maintenance cycles. Safety teams can monitor driver behaviour and identify risks early. Operational leaders can also plan and track sustainability initiatives as fleets evolve.

Across all functions, the focus is simple. Turn complex data into clear, informed decisions.

A single operating picture

By combining telematics, safety alerts and operational data, organisations gain a real time view of their fleet and their team.

They can see where vehicles are, how they are being used, whether issues are developing and whether someone may need help. This shared visibility supports faster response, better risk management and stronger support for people, especially lone workers, working in the field.

Built in partnership

Over more than a decade, we have worked closely with utilities and mining organisations across Australia. These teams operate in demanding conditions, often remotely and across large distances.

Their input has shaped a system designed for real world use.

Technology is only part of the solution. Ongoing support and collaboration are what make it effective. At Nova Systems, we work alongside clients from implementation through to continuous improvement, ensuring the platform evolves with their operations over years.

Preparing for what comes next

Electrification is a growing focus for many organisations. The shift to fleets of electric vehicles introduces new considerations around range, charging and operational planning.

Using Geotab telematics insights, these organisations can better understand current usage and identify where electric vehicles can be introduced effectively. Transitioning fleets requires more than replacing vehicles. It requires informed planning, the right tools, and the right data.

The real measure of success

At the end of the day, successful fleet and safety systems are not measured by the technology they contain. They are measured by the outcomes they enable.

The risks identified earlier. The incidents avoided. The people who return home safely.

If your organisation is ready to move beyond fragmented systems and build a clearer, more connected view of operations, I would welcome the opportunity to continue the conversation.
