Challenge
The FSP was subsequently renamed the Australian Sovereign Submarine Program (ASSP), with an ongoing mission to maintain an enduring submarine acquisition and sustainment technical capability; to be used in support of the Collins Class Life of Type Extension (LOTE) project and other Collins Class upgrade projects, such as Combat Systems upgrades.
Solution
Throughout the life of the FSP, Nova Systems provided support across combat systems engineering, Test & Evaluation (T&E), Verification & Validation (V&V), systems integration, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) and enterprise risk management support, to both the Technical Office and the Project Office. In 2020, Team Nova was appointed as a Major Service Provider to the FSP and had up to 100 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) personnel working on the program.
We continued to support FSP with project closure until June 2022 and ensured relevant artefacts have been retained, such as the modelbased systems engineering (MBSE) model, so the development of the technical requirements set for future nuclear-powered submarine can be informed from the existing work.
Outcome
Our approach supported the Collins Class LOTE Function and Performance Specification development, the retention of significant technical knowledge in both the acquisition and sustainment of submarines in Australia, and the pivot from the FSP to the ASSP.
Throughout the life of the program, Nova Systems has provided reliable, agile skills and capabilities to ensure the Capability Acquisition & Sustainment Group has the right team in place to support the most complex and expensive program in the history of the Australian Department of Defence
