Nova Systems Awards Academic Prize to University of Essex Graduate

26/07/21

Nova has awarded their 2020-21 academic prize to graduate Daniel Woolsey for his final year project.

Daniel’s final year project called ‘PUMPY’ developed an open source, 3D Printed medical use syringe pump for hands free drug delivery at 10% of their current market price which is approximately £1500 per unit. To add to this, both a touchscreen interface and an Android smartphone application for remote pump operation via Bluetooth was developed making the design user friendly.

“The team at Nova Systems are proud to award our 2020-21 award to such a worthy winner. Daniel has clearly demonstrated exceptional innovation and we’re thrilled to be able to recognise him for his efforts."

- Lucy Finlayson, Nova Systems

The module supervisor from the University of Essex said, "This open-source, 3D printed approach to manufacturing medical equipment can allow hospitals to handle supply issues internally (also during pandemics/health emergencies where medical equipment are in short supply and high demand). It can further help to provide inexpensive medical equipment to poor areas with limited modern technology. PUMPY was an outstanding project with a scope for real impact on the ground- both economic and social. Daniel has already been encouraged to apply for the 2021-22 Innovate UK’s young Innovator award, get in touch with hospitals to take this vision ahead!"
