Fire agencies across Australia needed a consistent and reliable way to assess and communicate fire danger. The solution had to support critical decision-making during bushfire events, be available around the clock, and adapt to evolving scientific research and changing community needs.

Solution

Nova Systems partnered with AFAC and the NSW Rural Fire Service to deliver the national AFDRS Web Portals. Bringing together data from across the country, the platform provides a single source of truth for Fire Danger Ratings, helping agencies make informed decisions when it matters most. 

Designed with end users at the centre, the portals deliver clear, intuitive experiences for a range of stakeholders. Built for scale, reliability and future growth, the platform continues to evolve alongside advancements in bushfire science. Today, Nova Systems provides ongoing management, support and continuous improvement as a fully managed service. 

Outcome

The AFDRS Web Portals provide fire agencies nationwide with trusted, consistent Fire Danger Ratings to support bushfire preparedness and response. The project strengthened Nova Systems’ position as a leader in geospatial and digital solutions, while delivering a critical national capability that helps protect communities across Australia.

The AFDRS platform won the 2022 SSSI NSW Australian Spatial Excellence Award for Technical Excellence.
